What are XPS boards?
XPS boards are rigid panels of extruded polystyrene foam with a closed-cell structure that resists moisture and carries high compressive loads.
Because the cells are closed and the extrusion tolerances are tight, XPS boards stay dimensionally stable over time and machine predictably. That combination is what makes extruded polystyrene a core material for manufacturers: a lightweight structural filler that adds insulation value without adding weight, and that behaves the same way on every board you feed into your line.

Compared with expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded XPS has a finer, fully closed cell structure. It absorbs virtually no water, holds its compressive strength in humid conditions, and cuts without shedding loose beads onto your production floor.

Manufacturers across Europe build Styrisol® XPS boards into their own products as an insulating, load-bearing core.
Sustainability: closed-loop XPS with take-back
Our XPS boards are 100% recyclable, and we operate a genuine closed loop with our customers. We deliver boards to your line; you compact your XPS production waste; we collect it and reprocess it into XPS raw material. We also convert EPS waste into XPS raw material, and our own production reuses internal XPS residual waste.
This is documented rather than asserted. Styrisol® GR-300 and GR-500 are covered by a third-party Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), with an FDES declaration for the French market, and our recycled content is certified by Centexbel. Abriso Jiffy holds ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and our XPS production runs on solar power.
Over a service life measured in decades, an XPS core keeps reducing the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of the product it sits inside — which is where the material earns its environmental case.
Custom XPS: precision-cut to your specification
We do not just supply standard boards. Our XPS lines are built for customisation: densities, thicknesses, surface textures, edge finishes and formats matched to your product.
Our slice-to-size machine in Anzegem cuts boards to your exact dimensions, our Góra site welds boards to widths of 900 – 1500 mm and produces lengths up to 4 m, and inline perforation is available where your bonding process needs it. Ultra-thin sheets start at 4 mm.
Send us your panel build-up, the load it has to carry and the process it has to survive, and we will specify the grade, thickness, surface and format — from pilot batch to volume supply.

Frequently asked questions about XPS boards

XPS boards are used as an insulating, load-bearing core inside manufactured products. Typical applications are sandwich panels, door and gate panels, refrigerated vehicle bodies, camper and caravan walls, wet-room substrates and printed display pieces.

XPS is extruded and EPS is expanded. Extrusion produces a finer, fully closed cell structure, so XPS absorbs virtually no water, holds higher compressive strength and cuts without shedding loose beads. EPS is lighter and cheaper, but less suitable where moisture, load or a clean machined edge matter.

Yes. Our slice-to-size line cuts boards to your exact dimensions, and we weld boards to widths of 900 to 1500 mm and produce lengths up to 4 m. Custom densities, surface textures and edge finishes are available on request, and a minimum order quantity applies to non-standard formats.

Ultra-thin Styrisol® sheets start at 4 mm. These are typically sanded flat and used for signage, display and marketing applications where the board is printed, routed or mounted.

Yes. The combination of high compressive strength, low weight and tight thickness tolerances makes XPS a common core for sandwich panels. Rough and fine-groove surfaces are available to improve adhesive keying, and perforated boards support vapour movement in bonded build-ups.

Extruded polystyrene is compatible with most building materials, including lime, cement, plaster, alcohols, acids and bases. Petroleum-based solvents, coal tar and derivatives can attack the material, and thinners such as acetone, ethyl acetate, petrol and toluene may damage the boards. We recommend solvent-free adhesives, and always advise validating your specific product against extruded polystyrene.

Yes. Styrisol® XPS boards are 100% recyclable. Recycled content is certified by Centexbel, and the GR-300 and GR-500 grades are covered by an Environmental Product Declaration.

Both are Styrisol® extruded polystyrene, but they are supplied for different uses. Industrial boards are cut to your specification as a core material inside manufactured products. Building boards are supplied in construction formats from 20 to 160 mm with the certifications required for insulating roofs, floors, walls and cellars.
