Flooring underlay for underfloor heating

Underfloor heating offers comfort, energy efficiency, and maximizes interior space. But to fully benefit from it, selecting the right components, especially the flooring underlay, is essential.

In this short quide we’ll explain why thermal resistance is the most important factor when choosing a flooring underlay for rooms with underfloor heating.

Our experts have created a quick cheat sheet to help you select the perfect underlay for your heated floors.

Why does thermal resistance matter?

The underlay is positioned directly above the heating system and beneath the final flooring layer (such as laminate, LVT, or engineered wood). If its thermal resistance is too high, it can hinder heat transfer, slow down warm-up times, and increase energy consumption.

Thermal resistance—also known as R-value—is a key factor in underfloor heating performance. It measures how easily heat passes through the underlay. The lower the resistance, the more efficiently heat reaches the surface, resulting in quicker heat-up times, faster responsiveness and high energy efficiency.

When thermal resistance is too high:

  • Heat gets trapped below the floor,
  • Energy is wasted,
  • The room takes longer to warm up.

What to look for in an underlay for underfloor heating

When choosing an underlay for use with underfloor heating, thermal resistance is crucial — but it’s not the only factor. For optimal comfort, durability, and performance, consider the following:

Certified performance and compliance with EN16354

We operate our own in-house testing center, conducting all relevant tests in compliance with EN16354 for laminate, parquet, and LVT underlays. This ensures that our products are safe, reliable, and contribute to quieter, more comfortable living environments.

We are also a proud associate member of both the European Producers of Laminate Flooring (EPLF) and the Multilayer Modular Flooring Association (MMFA). Our membership reflects a deep commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability, and positions us to help shape the future of flooring solutions in Europe.
