The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is set to transform the packaging landscape. Replacing the 1994 Packaging Directive, the PPWR introduces stringent requirements aimed at reducing packaging waste and promoting a circular economy.
Key objectives of the PPWR include:
- Harmonized Rules Across the EU: Transitioning from a directive to a regulation to ensure uniform implementation across member states.
- Design for Recyclability: By 2030, only recyclable packaging will be permitted in the EU market.
- Waste Minimization: Mandating reductions in packaging waste by weight and volume, and encouraging more efficient packaging designs.
- Minimum Recycled Content: Setting targets for recycled content in plastic packaging, such as 30% for single-use beverage bottles by 2030.
- Standardized labeling: Implement harmonized labels to inform consumers about recyclability and proper disposal.
These changes will impact stakeholders across the packaging value chain, from raw material suppliers to brand owners and retailers .
