Why PPWR matters?

PPWR is reshaping how packaging is designed, manufactured and managed across the European Union.

It establishes a single regulatory framework for all packaging materials, replacing fragmented national legislation with harmonised EU-wide requirements. The regulation aims to reduce packaging waste, improve recyclability and increase the use of recycled content, supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular economy.

PPWR will be introduced in phases between 2026 and 2040, giving businesses time to prepare while progressively raising packaging performance requirements.

What does this mean for Abriso Jiffy customers?

Is Abriso Jiffy ready for the first step?

Yes. Abriso Jiffy is prepared for the first PPWR requirements that become applicable on 12 August 2026.

Our products comply with the initial chemical safety requirements, including the absence of intentionally added PFAS and compliance with the applicable limits for heavy metals: Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Hexavalent Chromium.

PPWR implementation will take place in phases over several years. We are therefore continuously monitoring regulatory developments and actively preparing for upcoming milestones, including requirements related to recyclability, recycled content and harmonised labelling.

PPWR enters into force on 12 August 2026.

However, the most significant changes related to recycled content, recyclability grades and packaging design requirements will apply from 2030 onwards.

This means that companies need to prepare now, while the first immediate requirements focus mainly on compliance documentation and chemical safety.
From August 2026, packaging placed on the EU market must meet new compliance requirements, including:
- documentation proving compliance,
- information about packaging composition and weight,
- restrictions on certain substances,
- compliance with chemical safety requirements.
For our customers, Abriso Jiffy will provide the necessary product compliance information and support documentation.
For the 2026 requirements, Abriso Jiffy is prepared.

Our current compliance focus includes:
- PFAS restrictions,
- heavy metal limits,
- technical product information,
- customer support documentation.
Future PPWR milestones, such as recycled content requirements and recyclability classifications, are being actively prepared together with our customers and suppliers.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of chemicals that are restricted under PPWR due to environmental and health concerns.

PPWR introduces restrictions on intentionally added PFAS in packaging.

Abriso Jiffy is working to ensure that relevant products meet these requirements and can provide compliance information upon request.
Depending on the customer request, Abriso Jiffy can provide:
- product compliance information,
- product weight information,
- statements regarding PFAS and heavy metals,
- supporting laboratory test reports where available,
- PPWR-related declarations supporting customer compliance activities.
PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled): Material that has been used by consumers, discarded, and then collected for recycling. Examples include plastic bottles, packaging, or other products that have reached the end of their lifecycle with the consumer and are then recycled into new products.

PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled): Material that is recycled from industrial or manufacturing processes before it reaches the consumer. This includes scraps, trimmings, or byproducts generated during production, such as excess plastic from moulding or cutting processes, that are reprocessed and reused. PIR does not involve material that has been used by a consumer.
The first major recycled content targets apply from 2030.

For general plastic packaging, PPWR introduces a requirement of 35% PCR content.

Further increases are expected in later milestones, including 2040, where requirements will become more ambitious.
A closed-loop system keeps materials circulating within the supply chain.

For example:
1. Abriso Jiffy supplies protective packaging.
2. The customer uses the packaging.
3. Used packaging is collected and returned.
4. Material is recycled and used again in new products.
This approach helps create the circular economy targeted by PPWR.
The immediate 2026 requirements focus mainly on compliance information and chemical safety.

However, customers should start discussing future requirements such as:
- PCR content,
- recyclability,
- closed-loop solutions,
- packaging optimisation.
Early preparation will make the transition smoother.
